NEBE announces opening of canvasing days

A/A, February 29, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia has announced the opening of canvasing days. In Addis Ababa, nearly 30,000 nominees are vying for seats either in parliament and municipal council or for membership with local administrations.

NEBE Addis Ababa Coordinator Tadesse Hailemichael told ENA on Friday that candidates are getting their names and pictures posted across areas of their constituencies while they are receiving candidate IDs.

For Sub-city administrative councils, more than 3,000 candidates have come forward in competitions.

From the city, competitions will be held in a parliamentary by-election on 14 vacant seats. The by-election in Addis Ababa sees 122 contenders presented by 16 political parties.

According to the coordinator, EPRDF has fielded more than 29,000 candidates for local administrations in Addis. Other candidates include those presented by OFDM or privately individually.

For seats in sub-city councils, 43 candidates have come forth privately individually, according to the coordinator.
