    Twenty Five Years of Itching
When folks pride themselves on our civilization spanning 24 hundred years…on top of the steles and rock hewn churches, I see the manifestation in the culture of the multitude when it comes to respecting authority…Ethiopian do respect authority and successive governments have been banking on it shamelessly…shamelessly I tell ya, folks…
    Question
1-I am a confirmed old movie buff…so I would like to hit it off with Marilyn Monroe’s ‘the Seven Years Itch…’, don’t you worry I am not going to dwell on the windblown skirt…it is this twenty five years itching that has rendered us restless and listless that bugs me. A couple of months ago a member of the opposition touched many chords when he observed wistfully-for the past quarter of a century EPRDF has been telling us democracy is a process and chewing the same old cud to our College age kids on its watch -so is grieving, according to Billy Chrystal. It wouldn’t even dare bring in some fresh blood until perhaps recently forced under gun point…see, that says a lot about EPRDF, it is near sighted and spontaneous and it is rarely proactive…rarely. It always reacts when pushed to the corner…where were you when all these were brewing? I mean considering the fact that we are covered 24/7 and represented 100%?
2-The bulk of EPRDFites are ‘motivated’ to join the ranks-not all of them, and certainly not the old guard (see, I will never be able to lose my respect for the likes of Bereket Simon) – and they don’t see themselves rubbing shoulder with the multitude but feel like they are ‘cut off’ from the community and sneak around shaded and hooded in, behind tinted glass and security details…
Recently Aboy Sehbat reiterated the cliché -EPRDF’s ultimate goal is committing some kinda hara kiri or something…no one seems to buy it, though…you know why? If it were true we would be seeing it dying bit by bit. To the contrary, EPRDF has been living larger than life; it is ever gaining weight and accumulating wealth and influence. It hardly looks one contemplating donning the hermit’s cassock. What we actually see is the unmitigated and unquestioned sole power dominion. See, it was gradual- when the brave gallant warriors entered Addis, EPRDF went fifty-fifty, after solid quarter of a century, after giving the boots to all and sundry… it remained the sole ultimate arbiter of our cumulative fate. It culminated in the phenomenal election result of 2007…100%. One is tempted to ask in the words of Sylvester Jr-what are we, Father, Cannibals? In case you forgot that is a cartoon character, and the poor little feline asked that ‘cos dear old Sly tends to jump and consume everything that moves…even Junior’s pals are not spared…
3-Yeah, EPRDF is feared but is it respected? That is what we would like to know. Yes, a couple of individual members might be respected but what about the bulk of the party hierarchy? Some make you wonder where they went to school…I mean they talk like a herdsman pasturing cattle leaning on his staff…do you read the satirical Reporter column “Your Excellency, Honorable Minister”? There is little satire in it and a lot of hard facts…take your cues from it and try to figure out on whose hands the fate of the Nation is balanced…I have heard one of them talk like he is the law and reigns beyond it…thank God we have this Auditor General…he is getting ever wiser and bolder…I hope to God the AG will continue to exert maximum care as well and quit issuing controversial briefs that goes counter to the express dictum of the law as well as public opinion…
4-If only for the lack of any better alternative, folks don’t mind the fact that EPRDF is hanging tight on power…our questions and demands are purely that of governance…
4.1. Why doesn’t EPRDF go after the wealth? Where do these nouveau rich come from? Are they related to big shots, is it earned or cheated? The law allows it to! First mark the wealth and then follow the trail!
4.2. Why doesn’t it publish the wealth and earnings of all top ranking government employees?
5-Thank you for keeping the peace and the Nation together.
    6-God bless
