Surprise! U.S. Congressman pays homage to Africa’s head of terrorists

Today early in the morning shabait.com, Shabiya’s official website posted news about Congress Man Donald Payne’s talks with Isias Afewerki, the monarch of Shaebiya, in Asmara. Hasn’t he talked to Sheikh Hassan Daher Awes and Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and other rebel leaders from Ethiopia and Sudan among others, who are enjoying life in Asmara? We better assume so! But what issues has he discussed with Isias? The following…

Editor's Note:

If the architect of HR2003 (the infamous Donald Payne) is for democracy and human rights, how comes we don’t see him speaking up for Eritreans who are suffering under Shabian rule?

Long time ago we knew that something was fishy when it comes to his stubbornness for the passage of HR2003. Now - with no ambiguity - the king is naked!

Ato Seye Abrha deserves to be heard

By: Tedla Asfaw

The ethiopianreview.com Ato Elias Kifle is suggesting to boycott the meeting of Ato Seye Abraha with the Ethiopian Community next week and this effort similar to the boycott he organized against Engineer Hailu's gathering will fail miserably. Ato Elias accused Ato Seye Abraha for his role as a senior TPLF fighter before he was purged from TPLF after the military victory he led in the Badme war ten years ago with a trumpeted charge of corruption by Melese Zenawi and spent six years in jail.

(BPRW) Ethiopia; Origin of Humankind

Ethiopia, an east African nation landlocked between Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia and Kenya is credited with being the origin of all human life on earth. It is also the second oldest nation in the world to become officially Christian in the 4th century A.D. although it has been secular since the 1970’s.

Some Issue Highlights

By: Getachew Mequanent

Someone phoned me to express his regret that I went public to complain against Aiga. Given the current situation (e.g., the H.R. 2003 issue), it was not strategic to go after a Diaspora web site that was fiercely fighting to protect the interest of the Ethiopian people, he said. I told him that I was being transparent. My boss once got mad at me for doing a lousy job. I said to him that it was normal to make a mistake. He shot back by saying, “no, this is not your standard”. In a democratic society, you work hard to set your own standard and you better maintain it

From: Dawit

Dear Ben,

I heard Abebe Belew saying that he cannot vote for TPLF because he wasn’t born in Tigray. Correct me if I am wrong but is in it also the same here in the U.S? Don’t you have to live in your county (district) to elect people of representative? Let alone to participate in different state election. Trust me if that was possible every election I will go to the southern state of united states just to vote for democrat so republican won’t get elected.

From Netter,

Greetings Ben,

First, I would like to thank you for your efforts to bring democratic system in our country. Indeed, fair and balanced media is of paramount importance.

Anyway, Kenya is about to have general election. While their democracy ages almost the same old as ours, I have noticed very incredible change in their democracy. It seems like we are far behind. Please note that I didn’t mean that democracy grows only when there is a regime change. However, balanced and equal use of government media, free and fair election, as well as guaranteed constitutional rights proves the growth of democracy.

Ethiopia might not need to look far to the west to learn about democracy while there is a country next door that could be a good example for democracy. From this point of view, could you please review the process of the Kenya election and discuss what Ethiopian political parties and the government can learn from it?

Thanks,

On Democracy, the Western Hypocrisy and Africa

By: Kelemu Smeneh

It is obvious that we cannot establish democratic states overnight. But the gullible among us are used and abused by the West and disrupt the smooth state building, democracy enhancing process in Africa by demanding what is not achievable given the time and the process it takes to achieve the ultimate goal. Instead of state-building we Africans are encouraged by the west, albeit surreptitiously, to fight against each-other and prolong the time of our true emancipation. We are cut to sizes and we become small, economically and politically feeble states incapable of caring for our own.

The Rise and Debacle of Kinijit, Critical appraisal (Part Four)

By: Bekele Habte

It has been quite a while since Ethiopian politics has started being led not by a clear vision but by a short-term maxim of ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend’. Those students who hated the Emperor rule had to fall in love with Eritrean secessionist movements to work hard to become an instrument of Ato Isayas Afeworki.

H.R. 2003 is it Dead or Alive: You be the Judge

By: Dr. G. Dangew

It now appears the rush by voice vote in the house was a strategy by Rep. Payne to get the provision of H.R. 2003 before the 2008 appropriation. Here again, Payne and company had a choice of either an agonizing one-year or spare themselves from a debate on the Senate and a final death next year. The choice appears to be a compromise. With the help of Senator Leigh, they have managed to insert a language on one provision of H.R. 2003, in the Foreign affairs appropriation bill for the State Department.

Ethiopia's Next Steps on Somalia

By: Mulugeta Alemu

Prime Minster Meles Zenawi’s timely interview with the BBC on 20 December 2007 reaffirms what his administration tirelessly has been saying for quite a long time now; that peace-keepers should quickly be deployed in Somalia and that the international community ought to robustly support the transitional government and its institutions. So far both are unfulfilled promises, and the international community risks failing Somalia for the second time. It was the lack of coordinated international support which in the first place severely weekend the TFG and its institutions after its establishment in Nairobi in 2004.

Press Release from Ministry of Foreign Affairs

20 December, 2007

The New York Times reporter, Jeffrey Gettleman, had another piece on Ethiopia on December 14, 2007 under the Caption "In Rebel Region, Ethiopia Turns to Civilian Patrols". The article does not do justice to the credibility of the New York Times. The various strands of the narrative that the article conveys share one quality ---, they are all based on fictitious stories.

The Rise and debacle of Kinijit, critical appraisal (Part Three)

By Bekele Habte

.  .  .  of the six people whose name was first listed to represent KIL, Ato Andargachew Tsige, Ato Birhane Mewa and Ato Daniel Asefa are from Kestedamena. Shaleqa Yoseph and Dr Gebreye W/Rufael are from AEUP. Dr Moges G/Mariam is from UEDP-Medhin. In light of its actual strength, there can not be a single justification for Kestedamena to be given the lion’s share of representation. Was it by coincidence or design? If it is by design, who was behind this clever move? It seems pretty obvious that Kestedamena was working behind the curtain to dominate KIL to eventually control Kinijit.

Kinijit's/KIL  Executive Committee letter posted on EMF

From: Tedla Asfaw

The letter posted today (Dec. 14) on EMF website without the letter head of "Kinijit" at least is suspicious and if there is a planned conference for today why this comes out earlier? Something here smells fishy together with the alleged "battle" took in the office of Kinijit reported on Debteraw yesterday. The guard of KIC's Kinijit/Hailu fought "bravely" the KIL's Kinijit/Birhanu and hold his ground and the audio was posted on Debteraw.com site yesterday.

This childish behavior on Birhanu and Hailu cliques like we saw it here in the Diaspora is now playing in front of TPLF  designed to insult the millions who voted for Kinijit and the Ethiopian masses will be better off if all of them resigned before the anger of our people make them irrelevant. Those who repeated what Lidetu Ayalew and his cliques did more than two years ago will end up worst than them.

Editor's Note:

What we’re seeing here is beyond childish act! These are the learned men/women Ethiopians were looking up to. As a matter of fact many poor school children gave their lives hoping that this leadership will bring Civility & Democracy. By the time CUD needs fundamental reorganization and hard work in Ethiopia, Dr. Berhanu selfishly chose to stay in Diaspora to conduct some “research”. Right now nobody cares about CUD supporters who are languishing in jails in different parts of the country. That is very upsetting! The latest open letter penned by one of the former KIL leadership, Ato Dawit Kebede, is a case-in-point how low Diaspora politics can go!

H.R 2003 & the $210,000 Question: (Revisited)

By: Dr. G. Dagnew

We now know from US Justice Department Lobbing disclosures that all the above groups are involved in pushing H.R. 2003 in congress and have paid quite some money. It is now know that on January 2006 “the coalition affiliate (OLF, ONLF)” first contacted Bracewell & Giuliani to lobby, and then brought in the coalition (CUD) to pay its share $90,000. Since the US law requires source of money be disclosed, the OLF has also registered $141,921.07 with the Justice Department with intent and for the purpose of lobbying (see below). How ever, the total sum of 210,000 paid to Bracewell & Giuliani was registered under CUD’s name and the OLF did not list a separate lobby firm for its registered money

The Rise and debacle of Kinijit, critical appraisal (Part One)

By Bekele Habte

Irrespective of the media hype, Ferensay Legasion can not be Mrs Birtukan’s constituency as she did not run for election in May/05 representing the people of Ferensay Legasion. Mrs Birtukan joined the struggle after the June/05 massacre. To be exact, Mrs Birtukan’s association with Kinijit started when she volunteered with other professional lawyers to help Kinijit during the post-election dispute. Mrs Birtukan joined Kestedamena in early Sept/05. She was elected as Kinijit’s Vice Chairman in late Sept/05; only three weeks after she joined Kestedamena and only after three weeks party politics experience! Three weeks after she joined Kestedamena, she also nominated Ato Muluneh for Kinijit’s post of Secretariat.

The Rise and debacle of Kinijit, critical appraisal (Part Two)

By Bekele Habte

The release of all detained Kinijit members, the lifting of Engineer Hailu’s house arrest and the lifting of Ato Lidetu’s office arrest were the main preconditions Dr Birhanu was assigned to address. In spite of this clear instruction, Dr Birhanu failed to put forward any of the agreed preconditions. When Dr Birhanu was asked later why he failed to bring forward any of the preconditions, his answer was very surprising. Dr Birhnau simply told his colleagues that he completely forgot about the preconditions. Yes, you might find it hard to believe what you are reading! Knowing the gravity of the matter, I do not blame you. But it is nothing but the whole truth.

Click Here to read your feedback on peace over war (The final update)

By Stal,

Dear Ben, You stood clear of the political wind that seems to sway our educated ones left and right, and at times out of the normal rational arena. You have always stood on the right side, the neutral, and yet the side that protects our national interest.

I am an Ethiopian who has lost so much during the past war and will loose even more if another war erupts. As an Irob Ethiopian, it is tempting to advocate for war so that my identity as an Ethiopian shall never again be questioned. Yet, war is the worst solution for any problem and war between family members (Ethiopians and Eritreans are family members) is unthinkable.

Both you and the Awate group deserve credit for starting this dialogue and have a responsibility to take it even further. We should create small groups all over the world advocating against war, but more importantly for creating an atmosphere for creating a lasting peace based on our own local elders and religious leaders that combines our combined cultural heritage and the principles of conflict resolution.

Thanks you both

Your impartiality is, I would say, to the standard of Journalism ethics. Saying that: I now want to go to the main message of my today writing.

Secretary Rice with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi at Ethiopias National Palace.

Meeting With Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi

Today, I met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and representatives of the Ethiopian government to discuss issues of bilateral importance to both of our nations, with a focus on Ethiopia's relations with Somalia, Sudan and Eritrea. Other areas of discussion included regional security and fighting terrorism; democracy and human rights; economic development and food security; and public health concerns such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

Borderline war

The Economist - The likelihood of conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea is at its highest level in seven years. Eritrea is in the weaker position, politically and economically. At the end of November the UN-mandated Ethiopia-Eritrea Boundary Commission (EEBC) shut up shop and announced that its mandate had been fulfilled, notwithstanding the fact that neither government had agreed to the border first delineated by the EEBC in April 2002.

H.R. 2003 & the $210,000 Question

According to the December, 4 article of the New York Times,  Lobbying disclosure records indicate that some $210,00 was paid to arrange a power sharing agreement between the Ethiopian opposition groups and the government of Ethiopia. Kinijit North America boss Mr. Solomon Bekele admitted he only paid $90,000 of the total. The question is who paid the balance of $120,000? The disclosure does not say Shabia and its affiliates for now.   .    .     .   Finally, while I have answered who paid the $ 120,000 of the $210,000 for myself, I am still puzzled by who is still paying to re-write the Ethiopian constitution via H.R. 2003. I furthermore, feel duped for thinking that H.R 2003 was all about alleged human rights and not a cute power sharing arrangement for ONLF and Kinjit. Any way, it is good to know that it only takes few Dollars and a Donald Payne to violate the sovereignty of a country with 70 million people.

Rice's visit to Ethiopia puts focus on ally accused of human rights abuses

Andargachew Tsege, a leader of the opposition Coalition for Unity and Democracy, said that Rice's visit could overshadow the problems in Ethiopia, where four out of five people live on less than $2 per day.

Editor's Note

If my memory is correct, KIL (Kinijit International Leadership) has been dissolved and the elected leaders of CUD are now free. If so, how does Ato Andargachew consider himself as “a leader” of CUD? The last time I checked, Ato Hailu Shawel is still the elected leader of the party. Unless it is a power hangover from KIL days, Ato Andargachew is not a “leader” of CUD. Moreover, as Ato Andargachew stated on a record he is now a British citizen. Thus, Ethiopia cannot be run by a British citizen. Just for the record!

The Early Word: Iran

The New York Times - Mr. Giuliani, on the other hand, is being criticized for his law firm’s efforts in lobbying on behalf legislation that the Bush administration considers soft on terror around the Horn of Africa. The legislation sought by the dissidents proposes restrictions in American aid if Ethiopia does not agree to share power with opposition parties and take other steps promoting democracy. As part of its work, the Giuliani group set up a meeting at the White House last year at which the administration was urged to consider the viewpoint of a consortium of Ethiopian political parties that included Mr. Solomon’s group, as well as a more militant rebel organization.

Ethiopia: Top Opposition Party Asks US Congress to “Reassess” HR 2003

The UEDP-Medhin opposition party asked the US to re-examine the HR 2003 bill saying that it affects Ethiopia’s security and disregards some important details about current events in Ethiopia. The UEDP-Medhin opposition party said it supports the international focus on the human rights abuses by the government but accuses the bill for ignoring other forces, including some exiled Ethiopian groups sponsoring the bill itself, who should be held accountable for “mistakes they accepted” and their role in the post election turmoil.

In response to Mr. Tedla’s comment

I followed Melese Zenawi's discussion in Addis Ababa University with the higher institute community posted on ethiopiafirst.com and it was interesting. Melese Zenawi pointed out that quality education depends on the economy of the country and he said, "since we have limited government financial resources for  higher educations, students and educators have to understand this and try  their best to achieve quality education in the difficult circumstance they are now ".

Starbucks agrees to pay premium price for Ethiopian coffees

Howard Schultz, the Chairman of Starbucks who paid a three day visit to Addis Ababa this week with his senior officials, vows to pay premium prices for Ethiopian coffee.

Home for GENNA?

The two human rights activists (Daniel Bekele and Netsanet Demissie) received a two-and-a-half year jail sentence on Wednesday for inciting post-election violence in 2005. But so far they have served about 2 years and 2 months. Thus they will have 4 months left to serve.

The coalition of elders (Shimaglies) are working hard to get them out for GENNA, the Ethiopian Christmas of the new millennium, without serving the remaining 4 months.

Sources say that government authorities have granted the wishes of the Shimaglies for the early release of Netsanet and Daniel. Unless mid and low level bureaucrats complicate the process the two gentlemen are hoped to be home for GENNA.

God speed for the Shimaglies

Verdict in Ethiopia Trial Postponed Yet Again

ActionAid's chief executive Ramesh Singh said: "It is very hard to hide our distress and exasperation at yet another delay in concluding this case. Daniel and Netsanet's lawyer argued in court that justice delayed is justice denied. It is certainly most unfair that Daniel and Netsanet are having to wait in jail for a verdict that was promised almost two months ago. They have been imprisoned for more than two years, convicted of no crime. We implore the court to find a way to bring this case to a speedy conclusion."

Editor's Note

Justice delayed is justice denied!

What we’re witnessing here is quite unacceptable. As a matter of fact it is outrageous! It is a high time for all of us to stand on a side of fair justice! This is a replay of Ato Seye Abereha’s case, where judges were "sick" over a dozen times! I urge supporters of EPRDF to speak out against this injustice! Friends don’t let friends abuse power!

VOA Amharic, Oromo Shows Jammed; Ethiopia Denies Responsibility

In a telephone interview with VOA, Ethiopia's Information Ministry spokesman Zemedkun Tekle says he doubts the government is involved in jamming. "I do not think this one is true.

Editor's Note

What I found comical in this news article is the response given by the government spokesperson.  Ato Zemedkun Tekle, Ethiopia's Information Ministry spokesman, stated that he doesn’t “think” the story is true. He was quoted in the article saying "I myself have not come across audiences who are saying so, but the relevant body may speak on the details, but I do not think this story is true."

First of all what is needed here is the facts, not his opinion! He is there to speak on behalf of the government. So the public deserve an honest answer. Is Ethiopian govt jamming VOA and Germany's Deutsche Welle? If so, why? Instead of hiding behind “I think” phrases, let us hear their justifications. If these allegations happen to be true, why is the regime wasting tax-payers’ money for such worthless task? Does the government wonder why its citizens are tuned to VOA and Deutsche Welle? Simply put the public is fed up with the programs being broadcasted within the country. It is wise for the regime to broadly open up its air waves to the private sector than wasting its meager resource on jamming foreign based radio programs.

AFD is dead, again!

Alliance for Freedom & Democracy (AFD) was a union of one-time hyped "Arebegnoch Genebar" (EPPF), ONLF, OLF, CUD, and SLF. This unholy alliance brought division and embarrassment for the Diaspora CUD. By allying with a terrorist group such as ONLF, The Diaspora CUD undermined the core principle of CUD manifesto. For many, who read Kinijit’s election manifesto thoroughly, the decision to form an alliance with armed forces was a shock. Credit is due to the UEDF Diaspora for refusing to be dragged into this unholy merger.

Due to this reckless marriage they put themselves in; the Diaspora CUD was mute when ONLF massacred over seventy civilians.  It was indeed awkward for the Diaspora CUD to denounce the horrendous acts while being in the same coalition with the culprit.  Many of us asked the CUD Diaspora to disassociate itself from this union. However, what we have been told was the alliance was also approved by CUD leaders in Kality.

On their last news briefing in N. America, the freed leaders dropped the bombshell we knew all along.  In an indisputable tone they told everyone that Kinijit shared neither a common agenda nor strategy with any political forces that have opted for armed struggle like the ONLF. They stated that they were not there when it was formed and they do not deal with armed groups like OLF and ONLF.

I personally appreciate the leadership for clearing the cloud. I do hope that they will go one step further and denounce ONLF for its heinous crimes against civilians. By officially disassociating itself from terrorist groups like ONLF, the CUD proved its commitment to a peaceful means towards democracy. This is music to the ears of millions of Ethiopians who are tired of "GeDluaL GeDluaL ….. ZeNaru GoDluaL" tune.

OPERATION WECHALE

Dear the Silent Majority,

More than ever different interest groups are engaged to undermine our sovereignty through HR2003. The only law Ethiopia should be governed on is its own constitution, not a manuscript doctored by few ego-driven congressmen. In her stretched history, Ethiopia never bowed for outsiders' pressure and rest assured that she will never do so in the future!

Dear the Silent Majority, during this trying times some Honorable Senators are standing with Ethiopia. Senator James Inhofe is one of those who stood up bold in her guard. The vocal Diaspora is now quite busy denouncing this honorable senator in every way possible. It is now up to us, the silent majority, to get in touch with this senator and express our respect and appreciation. Please pick up the phone and contact his office. You may pass on your message via fax and/or e-mail. Please do it now.

If it is not you, who? If not now, when? Just do it!

CUDP leaders back to KALITI?

CUDP leaders were released from prison after being sentenced for life imprisonment and after signing a pardon facilitated by the Coalition of Elders. These CUDP leaders left for Europe and USA, right after their release without any attempt to address their constituents in the country and without any party conference of any sort.

With the exception of Dr Berhanu Nega who has cannily planned to stay in the USA and weather the storm, many CUDP leaders are planning to return to Ethiopia sometime soon but may head directly to Kality Prison.

Reliable sources say that the government will commute their pardon and put some of them back to prison. Sources say that the government is furious about their damning speeches abroad as well as their alliance with rebels and extreme fronts. Sources say that the government is going to sternly prove to “their patrons and sponsors” that no Donald Payne or no Ana Gomez will save their neck, that “Ethiopia is no banana republic”, and that  “no HR 2003 will bend the resolve of the government”.

The impetus behind such retribution by the government is because the administration believes that the released CUD leaders went into a full swing of campaign contrary to the pardon letter they signed. They openly and pejoratively ridiculed the legitimacy of many branches of the government and its current constitution. They accredited foreign government bodies and personalities for the alleged pressure exerted that resulted in their release. They aligned with political forces and separatist fr<
onts that have taken arms to abolish the government.

Stay tuned.

' Despite saying he never expected anything positive from the ruling party, Professor Beyene condemned them stating “EPRDF has not changed; the claim of new spirit in the new millennium is all propaganda.” '

Editor's Note: This is a very interesting argument. Is the good Professor saying that the litmus test for Ethiopian democracy is his being elected as Ethiopian President? I find this line of argument quite weak.

On a different note, he voted against Ethiopia's involvement in Somalia. With aspiration to become President, how can he defend the fundamental bill he voted against? This is bizarre. I can conclude by saying 'only in Ethiopia'.

Dear Netters,

Coalition of Elders had a dinner reception at Fasika Restaurant in Addis Ababa for one of their own Haile GebreSellasie on the occasion of his triumph at the Berlin Marathon a week ago.

Coalition of Elders presented Haile a manuscript written in Brana praising him for shattering the marathon world record by 29 seconds and for returning the record back to Ethiopia by emulating one of his Ethiopian heroes, Abebe Bikila.

On a similar note, Coalition of Elders are working tirelessly to secure the release on many prisoners who were associated with the cases of Kinijit. These are prisoners who are not prominent personalities and who have no one to actively advocate for them.

Coalition of Elders are also working hard to create medium for dialog between the Synod of Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Ethiopia and that of the Diaspora.

Statement by the Embassy of Ethiopia on Action by House Foreign Affairs Committee

"Ethiopia is the only African country never to suffer colonial rule. We are a proud and ancient civilization, always open to discussion and advice from our friends. But under no circumstances will Ethiopia accept what it regards as officious intermeddling by misinformed Members of Congress to intrude in our internal politics."

Editor's Note

Well said Ambassador Samuel Assefa for a finely crafted statement.

It is true that HR2003 has been marked up on Sept 26, 2007. However, a lengthy process will follow before it reaches the President's desk, if the bill doesn't expire prior to that date. Even so, the bill is not what I want to highlight here. Neither do I want to blame
Congressman Payne and Co. for his actions. For this is his desire and he can play his cards as he wishes. Nor do I also want to censure the relatively small number of vocal Diaspora who day-in and day-out work to chastise Ethiopia, in the guise of fighting the governing party. I worry that these folks are blinded by their hate for the governing party and will do anything possible to succeed in their alarming mission. Case in point being their unashamed cheerfulness at the recent ONLF's brutal massacre of Ethiopian and Chinese civilians. For them there is no demarcation line between the nation and the governing party. It is sad but this is the ugly reality we live in!

Indeed, I do not fault these groups at all. They have a clear agenda and they're promoting it brilliantly. The crisis I see is with us- the silent majority- who lack considerable actions. We do understand that these few vocal Diaspora groups are working against the interest of our nation.

However, what are we doing? (Rather, what are we NOT doing?) We are mute and action less, while we watch a foreign nation pass a bill that undermines our proudly cherished sovereignty! How can we really tolerate to see President Bush decide on the fate of Ethiopia every six months? (Yes, ladies and gentlemen, read HR2003 attentively for the premises are absurdly colonialist in nature). With such stipulations, our current inaction will resonate louder after the fact and what a sad fact that will be in the history of Ethiopia.

All the same, I do recognize there are human right issues in Ethiopia among many other problems. However, it should be up to Ethiopians to recognize and remedy the human rights issues and all our other problems.  It should not be up to a foreign leader and a foreign nation to 'fix' via HR2003 or any other bill for that matter.

So what can we do to reverse the damage already done by the few vocal Diaspora? My humble suggestion is: let us organize ... organize ...organize ourselves, RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW. Let's put ourselves to action.

Please forward us your suggestions on this matter.

Dear Netters,

I heard that the dialogue between members of the Diaspora currently visiting Ethiopia and government officials (namely Ato Meles Zenawi & Ato Seyoum Mesfin) went beyond expectations. The convention took place in the newly built Millennium Hall. Although the organizers had projected for 800 people to attend, over 4,000 members of the Diaspora poured into the Millennium Hall. You may read the report on SS Informer.  My sources revealed that it was a candid and informative discussion.

These are the kind of activities we expect from the Millennium Secretariat Office.  To my personal judgment, the MS office wasn’t up to the expectation. I do hope that the govt will empower that office by bringing more qualified people to the team. Though it was late to join the office, the presence of Ms Netsanet Asfaw (an honest and hard working lady) improved the work of that office.

Ben Sept 21, 2007 1:32 Eastern Time

Dear Netters,

Here follows the interview with Ato Bedru Adem on Paltalk (Sept 17, 2007) LISTEN

Dear Netters,

Couple of days ago (Sept 11 to be precise) I posted a note to inform you about the crack within CUD leadership. The intention of the posting was two-folds. First & foremost, I believe that the public has a right to be informed. The second reason was for kinijit supporters to come together and save the party from disintegration.  Not to my surprise, as usual the vocal Diaspora declined to be a uniting force and became cheerleaders. Instead of focusing on the issue at hand, some kept throwing mud at this blogger.

Today - 5 days after my first posting - nobody can deny that my earlier words of warning were true. Nobody from Dr. Berhanu's group welcomed Engineer Hailu Shawel at the Washington Airport. Click HERE to listen to how Ms Bertukan Mideksa refused to answer the questions being forwarded by Netsanet Le Ethiopia journalist. You may click HERE to listen to what Engineer Hailu Shawel had to say on Ethiopiawinet Radio. The party’s chairman, who was supposed to lead the delegation to USA, didn’t even attend the main conference in Arlington, Virginia on Sept 16.

In all honesty, nobody can really benefits from the breaking up of CUD. It is going to be a major lose for Ethiopian politics. It is unfortunate to see all these educated men & women being unable to solve their  differences and stay united. I repeat my earlier advice: “I hope CUD leaders set aside their personal bickering and work together to mature Ethiopian politics.”

It is not too late, yet time is ticking …

Ben Sept 16, 2007 11:15 pm Eastern Time

Dear Netters,

I'm back to "Sedet" or as we widely call life in "Diaspora". I already miss Ethiopia. I'm in love with that humble and God-fearing country. I'm longing the time I will pack and leave Ferenje Hager! We belong there, not here! At least that is what I think for myself. I now feel like I'm a fish out of water. I'm madly in love with Ethiopia. Ethiopia is calling for her children to go back and help her out. We have to help the poor by creating job opportunities. It is also a time for us to set a foot in the country. Ethiopia shouldn't be a place where we send only our coffins! We have to be part of the solution.

Ben Sept 16, 2007 Eastern Time

Selam my dearest Netters,

MelKame Awede Amet!

I do hope that all of you had a magnificent holiday. Here in Ethiopia the Millennium celebration commenced in big! To be quite frank with you the whole nation is in a joyful and peaceful spirit. I don’t think that it was created by the Millennium Secretariat Office or the Prime Minister Office for that matter. The public took it as its own and celebrated in a graceful manner.  I mean I felt PROUD, again, to be part of this great nation. The main rationale why we celebrated a peaceful holiday is primarily because the public created that environment. We all know how easily cities become chaotic right after Super ball games or Stanly cups, let alone world cups or Olympics! But Ethiopians celebrated their Millennium in a classy way …. We had huge parties, but orderly celebrations! This is my people! That makes me proud.

I don’t know how I can pen the spirit I witnessed in the Millennium hall. It is beyond explanation! You might have seen some pictures and/or video clips. But, that doesn’t reveal the true feeling in that hall. In that gigantic place I saw a united Ethiopia celebrating her birthday in a colorful way. Muslims, Christians, locals, Diasporas, different ethnic groups, ruling party and opposition party supporters, government officials …. celebrated in harmony. There was no divisive room for cheap party politics. Ethiopia was the one and the only spotlight. Hallelujah! It will not be fair to talk about the concert and fail to mention the person who made it possible. God bless Ethiopia’s Sheikh Mohammed Al-Amoudi. This generous individual did not put only his money, but his heart as well. I never had a chance to talk to this individual. But if I do, the only question I will raise would be about his strong passion towards our Emama Ethiopia.

Dear Netters, the reason why we had a peaceful holiday is not because Shabia and our adversaries stopped their sinister actions. Not at all! Everything was orderly because of the awesome work of the law enforcement officials and the active engagement of the public at large. Together, we won! One more time Ethiopia came out graceful! Together, we can change what seems today impossible. It is now up to all of us, including Diaspora, to promote reconciliation. Let us declare “ZemeCha Tsehai GeBat” on hate!

I love you all.

P.S. I’ll be leaving Ethiopia tomorrow. Back to Diaspora L I’ll miss this people and I hope to come back soon!

Ben Sept 13, 2007   11:43 AM Local Time

Dear Netters,

Credible source close to CUD told me that the split between Dr Berhanu Nega and Engineer Hailu Shawel is quite large. Another source informed me that the break up is along their earlier party lines. This is very sad news. What Ethiopia needs right now is a political party to practice democratic approaches to resolve internal differences. I hope CUD leaders set aside their personal bickering and work together to mature Ethiopian politics. From what I heard Ms Anna Gomez is speaking publicly for Dr. Berhanu Nega to become CUD president. I have great admiration and respect for Dr. Berhanu Nega. However, I don't think that it is up to Ms Anna Gomez to choose who should lead Kinijit. That is the mandate of CUD supporters, not a Ferenji from Brussels.

Stay tuned.
