DO THE MATHEMATICS?
9 hundred 99 years left to 3000!!! The
real countdown begins.

To the people of
Ethiopia, let me wish you one last time: Happy Millennium & Happy
New Year. It is a wonderful feeling as a native of Ethiopia to
celebrate the year 2000. I love the way Ethiopians and our foreign
guests rejoiced in the festivities, partied in the galas and
observed the holiday with their families. The people of Ethiopia
radiated their national colors with pride and celebrated this
historic day with love and harmony.
To all the citizens, people and genesis of Ethiopia, please take a
moment to immerse in the landmark event you are currently
witnessing. The change of the first millennia to the second
millennia is now occurring in your lifetime. It is officially the
second millennium and will be so for another thousand years or more
precisely nine hundred ninety nine years.
NOW WHAT?
Now what are we going to do? Where do we go from here? Who will be
the ones to do it? Why does it even matter? When will it be?
If you thought celebrating the second millennium was the finish
line, wake up people of Ethiopia!!! It is just the beginning. The
countdown starts now. What will the children of the third millennium
have to say about us when they celebrate on September 11, 3000? How
about 99 years from now on September 11, 2099?
What will be the GDP of Ethiopia? What % of Ethiopians will be
literate? How many Olympic sporting events will we be competing in
other than the 5k, 10k and marathon? Who will be our superstar
football player in the 2042 world cup? How about advances in
medicine? How many doctors will we count by July 15, 2065? Will
Addis Abeba still be the largest city? Or will there be a farsighted
urban planner that will make Arba Minch top Addis as the place to
be? Who will be the Teddy ‘Future’ of September 11, 2099? How about
an Ethiopian made vehicle? What would we call it?
I pray and hope there are a number of gifted Ethiopians out there
ready to make such achievement. Actually, I know there are many such
individuals ready to make a collective impact.
What, where, who, why and when?
What, where, why and when will you achieve your landmark?
Do the life math, if you waste one day in a lifetime of 99 years
(anyone is lucky to live that long) it would be like wasting how
many years in a lifetime of 999 years?
While you calculate…please do not miss the point.
Every day matters.
Most of all, every who matters, as in our individual
performance we will reveal what kind of people we are.
